Harnessing Innovative Bioherbicides: Exploring Their Potential to Manage Palmer Amaranth (Pigweed) and Waterhemp in Soybean Production Fields

Project Summary

Both Palmer amaranth and waterhemp pose significant challenges for farmers. The problem is worse with the development of herbicide resistance in these weeds, which limits management options. Bioherbicides, biological agents such as fungi or bacteria that selectively target problematic weeds are newly developed tools that could provide additional options. This research will develop potential herbicides that the research team has recently discovered. The team will demonstrate the efficacy of these bioherbicides and test different formulations and application methods.

Project Objectives

Objectives of this project include:

  • optimizing production of two biocontrol strains and develop formulations to improve delivery
  • isolate bioherbicide strains from pigweed and waterhemp to develop genomic resources for bioherbicide optimization
  • assess potential between the bioherbicides and commonly used chemical herbicides
  • survey the industry to assess bioherbicide acceptance.

Palmer amaranth and waterhemp pose a significant challenge for U.S. soybean producers, with management costs exceeding $100 per acre. The development of bioherbicides can supplement traditional herbicides for improved weed management, enhance the sustainability of existing practices, reduce costs and increase profitability.
